FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I have shopped around and one or two of my quotes seem to be far cheaper than all the others. Why would this be?

There are many factors that determine the value of a diamond. Most people judge a diamonds price by its size, its colour grade and its clarity grade but these are only three criteria of many that will have an effect on price. The way a diamond is cut, for example, can represent up to 50% of the value of that diamond. Other factors such as fluorescence can make the diamond appear milky. Some merchants drill out the natural inclusions in a diamond and can fill the holes with synthetic material. It is important therefore to have faith that your jeweller will know about and disclose these details about your diamond. If you have a quote for what appears to be the same item that seems well below all the others beware. As with most things in life, if it seems too good to be true it probably is.

What about diamonds on the Internet?

The true beauty of a diamond can only be realised in the eye of the beholder. Diamonds that may seem to have good credentials can still appear glassy and dull if their cut is flawed. The tiniest variation in dimensions can be so important to the way a diamond sparkles. Remember, there are so many factors that determine the value of a diamond that shopping on size, colour and clarity alone is not enough to ensure an informed decision. A responsible jeweller with diamond grading skills will take all the criteria into account before presenting you with a diamond to view, as well as provide long term back up service. Can you be sure that the internet seller would do the same?

If a diamond comes with a certificate can its quality be assured?

In a perfect world everyone would adopt the highest standards and live their lives by them. Unfortunately our world is not so perfect and discrepancies in quality do occur between diamond grading bodies. Just because a diamond comes with a certificate does not guarantee its quality. Within the industry it is widely accepted that some grading laboratories work to a higher standard than others and even the best labs will still grade an awful diamond. Having a certificate with a diamond will help determine its credentials but backing that certificate up with the informed knowledge of a trained professional will ensure that you can be sure of its quality.

Can I use some gemstones that have been in my family?

The idea of carrying on a family tradition with jewellery is one of the reasons jewellery is so special and becomes so sentimental. We are experts at custom making jewellery items and can advise you on the use of gemstones that you may already have. It is important to note however, that the technology used to cut diamonds today is far superior to years past and today's diamonds tend to sparkle more.
